On Thursday, Kevan chaired a Westminster Hall debate on the National Shipbuilding Strategy.

Kevan drew attention to the highly technical skills and jobs within UK shipyards and the wider supply chain.

He stated that: “UK shipyards provide highly-specialised employment in sectors such as naval architecture, nuclear marine engineering, and project management. In order for the UK to build warships, the Government must support these skills. This starts with awarding the £1bn Fleet Solid Support Ship contract domestically.”

The union, GMB, estimate that the awarding of the Fleet Solid Support Ship contract would support 1,800 shipyard jobs, with many more thousands supported throughout the supply chain, and the wider economy.
