The Tory plan for National Service is a desperate gimmick that will do more harm than good.Firstly, it will be funded by taking £1.5bn out of the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF). That would mean taking money away from initiatives such as Durham Works, which is funded through the SPF. Secondly, even Conservative Defence Ministers admit that mandatory military service is not worth the cost!Durham Works is a dedicated project for young people aged 15-24 years old, who need extra help when making decisions about education, training and employment opportunities.
