On January 8th (Friday), MP for North Durham Kevan Jones visited Dogs Trust Darlington. This was Kevan’s first visit to the rehoming centre, and he was given an extensive tour of the facilities by staff. He also met a number of dogs currently waiting for their “fur-ever” homes, including two year old terrier crossbreed Foxy.
Dogs Trust Darlington Supporter Relations Officer, Rebecca McKeown said: “We were delighted to welcome Kevan to have a tour of our facilities. There were lots of waggy tails as he arrived at the rehoming centre and it was a great opportunity to show him first hand the work we do for dogs in the local community. There are exciting times ahead for us and we look forward to working with Kevan as we head into the future!”
Kevan also discussed animal welfare issues with Dogs Trust staff, including the charity’s priorities and work ahead of the upcoming change to the law requiring owners to microchip their dogs. From 6th April, owners must have their dogs microchipped and ensure registered contact details are kept up to date, otherwise they could face a fine of up to £500. Dogs Trust is working tirelessly to help owners get their dogs microchipped before April, offering free microchipping for dogs at their 20 rehoming centres nationwide.
Kevan Jones MP said: “I really enjoyed my visit to Dogs Trust. The staff were all incredibly enthusiastic about their jobs and the dogs seemed very happy with their environment. Dogs Trust not only does a great job at rehoming dogs in need of a new home, but also does some fantastic policy and awareness campaigning which I fully support. They deserve special credit for all the work and investment they are putting into microchipping.”
