Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham, and former Veterans Minister, is urging Second World War Veterans not to miss the chance to take part in the Heroes Return programme, which will come to an end in the next couple of months.
The programme is being run by the Big Lottery Fund to mark the 65th anniversary earlier this year of VJ Day, and is providing funding for veterans or their widows to revisit the place where they saw active service. So far funding has been provided for veterans to return to places ranging from France and Greece to the Far East and Australia.
Mr. Jones said, “This scheme is an excellent way to mark an important anniversary, and I am aware that over 10,000 trips have already been taken with funding from this project.
“I would encourage any of my constituents who served in the Second World War to consider a Heroes Return before the end of the year.”
Veterans who would like to apply can call 0845 0000 121, email [email protected], or visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_heroes_return.
Trips must be taken by the end of 2010, but funding can be applied for retrospectively until 31 January 2011.
