Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham, has welcomed the ongoing work of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The Trust supports community-based projects in former coalfields throughout the UK, including many projects in the North East, through awarding grants. They also work with other agencies such as Citizens Advice to tackle problems such as unemployment and poverty.

Mr Jones said: “The Coalfields Regeneration Trust have done excellent work in North Durham and throughout the region in helping to regenerate former mining areas, and also in supporting people in those communities through the economic downturn.

“About twenty different projects in my constituency have benefited from Coalfields Regeneration Trust grants over the last two years, from cricket clubs to community bands and residents associations. They have made a real, positive difference in the area.”

Over the last two years, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust has awarded grants to projects in North Durham totalling more than £200,000.
