Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham, has been visiting the Falkland Islands in his role as a Shadow Defence Minister.
Mr. Jones attended the Remembrance Day Service at Christ Church Cathedral on the Islands, before laying a wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice at San Carlos Cemetery. This was followed by a visit to the 1982 Memorial Wood and a Battlefield Tour. Other attendees at the service included Mark Lancaster M.P., and HRH the Duke of Kent.
Mr. Jones said, “I am pleased to be able to visit the Falkland Islands again, and particularly to be able to spend Remembrance Day here. This year of course has special significance, marking thirty years since the Falklands War. The service at San Carlos cemetery gave us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice of the service personnel who gave their lives in that conflict, and to remember those who continue to serve on active duty around the world.”
Mr. Jones, who also serves as a Commonwealth War Graves Commissioner, will today visit Stanley Cemetery to see the War Graves there and to present the Museum Manager with a plaque on behalf of the commission.
